About Me

My photo
My name is Sara and I am an art teacher at a small elementary school in the Sunshine State. I teach Kindergarten through fifth grade students. I believe arts education is an integral part of a child's success in school and in life. Students take home more than projects they've completed. They come home with confidence, passion, curiosity, and most importantly, "life".

Line Paintings

Students drew straight, curvy, and zig-zag lines dividing their paper into four sections. Then they painted each section a different color, using only primary colors. This was also a lesson in how to hold a paint brush and how to paint with tempera paints. A first for some kindergarteners! Sorry, no pictures for this.

Gingerbread Man Collage

Kindergarten students experienced how to collage on a very simply level. I showed them how to draw a gingerbread man figure. They painted the gingerbread man with white paint to look like he had icing on him. Then, we added oil pastels for creative detail. We cut out the gingerbread man and then glued on buttons on his "belly". So cute!

FIRST POST!

Before I delve into all the awesome projects we have done, I would like to take a moment to say that general information about our art program is on our school website. I will be using this blog to update everyone on the specifics of what we are doing.

The art program is a comprehensive one. I have a scope and sequence that I follow to make sure the students get a broad variety of art instruction. I do my best to make sure each student that walks through the door is able to use many different types of art materials and learns many different types of processes. In a given year, the students here are exposed to: artist studies, clay, collage, color studies, drawings, glue pastel projects, landscapes, line studies, still life, observation, patterns, point of view, pointillism, pop-art, portraits, printmaking, shapes, symmetry, and weaving (just to name a few!)

In future posts, I will be sharing projects and pictures with you so you can see what awesome art we do. After all, Art is SmART!
